Collaborations always go a little differently than expected. Timing is sometimes off, there are miscommunications, expectations aren't always met, but sometimes a collaboration can go so smooth, and everything balances out perfectly. That was the case when we brewed Past Meets Presence with our friends at Seattle Beer School, Full Throttle Bottles, and Bottleworks. Inspired and named after Holy Regan excellent Good Beer Hunting article (link in bio), this beer isn't marked by a specific style but combines traditional Saison brewing with the hop-centric styles of the US.

This beer is balanced, bitter, refreshing, and challenging, in line with the mystique of traditional Saisons. Aromas of lime, clove and white pepper carry over into flavors of green grape and grapefruit. We could not be more excited for y'all to try this beer! Available only at Aslan locations, Bottleworks, and Full Throttle Bottles.

Fish Have Feelings is a beer born from a desire to represent sustainable farming in the brewing industry. We love being an organic brewery but we get even happier when we get the privilege to use local, organic, Salmon-Safe ingredients. All of the malt and hops in this beer come from farms in Washington committed to both of these sustainable farming practices. The malt came from Skagit Valley Malting and the hops came from Roy Farms Hops by way of Yakima Chief.

This West Coast IPA is smooth. The initial sips bring hop flavors of apricot, candied strawberries, and orange marmalade to pair with the grainy, biscuity malt characters. As you dive deeper the piney and more resinous flavors come out and you're greeted by a pleasant, lingering bitterness. This is a beer FOR the people but it is truly a beer OF the earth. We hope that this beer can help raise awareness and give back to the planet that we all call home. Cheers to Earth, we love it here!

Fish Have Feelings: A Celebration of One of Earth’s Most Important Life Forms

Happy belated Earth Day! At Aslan, Earth Day is one of our favorite holidays. That’s why we thought it would be special to switch things up this year and give Earth Day it’s very own community beer. Introducing, Fish Have Feelings! A west coast IPA featuring Salmon Safe malt and hops. Not only is this beer a refreshing treat for humans, but a minimal impact on our scaly friends in nearby waterways.

We’re always talking amongst ourselves about how lucky we are to live and make beer in one of the most gorgeous parts of the country. One of the perks of our location is being surrounded by amazing local farms, like Hedlin Farms providing us with world-class organic malt in Skagit Valley, or Roy Farms and their incredible hops, just east of us. 

You might be wondering, what is Salmon Safe?

On the Fish Have Feelings label, you might notice a new logo next to our usual Aslan hophead. This is a good place to start, since Salmon-Safe is an ecolabel that shows the ingredients in that specific product have been vetted to ensure farming and sourcing practices are helping to keep Pacific Salmon thriving in West Coast watersheds.

Much like the process for getting our beer to be certified organic, Salmon-Safe has a master list of certified farms that support their mission. This certification means that these farms are environmentally conscious when it comes to water use, sediment control, biodiversity conservation, pest management, and more.

Fortunately for us, those farms are suppliers for Skagit Valley Malting, and Yakima Chief Hops, from who we source a large portion of our ingredients from. For more on why Salmon Safe is import to Yakima Chief Hops, check out the great article they put together here! By purchasing this beer, you are directly supporting healthy watersheds and Salmon Safe farming practices.

While the goal is to create more demand for Salmon Safe farming, this project is just one ripple in the pond when it comes to making it more accessible and popular. We look forward to working with Salmon Safe more in the future and seeing the impact they make throughout the craft brewing industry!

We are extremely excited to bring you the second beer we've brewed to honor a Bellingham sister city. This year we focused our energy on our Sister City Punta Arenas (the namesake of this beer), located in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region of Chile. Punta Arenas is home to the oldest brewery in Chile, and their flagship Helles Bock is the inspiration for this beer.

We also wanted to tie this beer into historical brewing in Chile as a whole. An essential part of beer history in Chile is Chicha; a fermented corn drink not too different from beer (although it is un-hopped). As a nod to this traditional use of corn in fermentation, we used corn as a large portion of the mash. The corn provides a smooth, almost creamy aspect to this beer. With flavors of wild honey, toasted bread, and strawberry jam, this beer's malt-forward tendencies are balanced by an herbal and subtle lavender presence from the hops. Punta Arenas is refreshing and is a great compliment to any meal, whether at the Brewpub with a burger or down at Aslan Seattle enjoying some fresh Local Tide.

A huge thank you goes out to the Bellingham Sister Cities Association for their partnership and help on this project. We are very stoked to explore more sister city beer projects in the years to come!

Ginger Rye is back! We're happy to see the return of an Aslan classic that has been with us from the beginning. Inspiration for this beer comes from a delicious cocktail called the "Moscow Moose." As the name suggests, this American Pale Ale tastes like ginger and rye, balanced with the bready and biscuity notes from the malt and the pine and floral notes from the Centennial hops. It is one of our favorite Spring/Summer beers to take to the lake, on a hike, or to the backyard for some sun. However you choose to enjoy Ginger Rye, may it be as unique and exciting as this beer. Meet Spencer and Corey, Aslan’s in-house chemists.

Spencer joined us first, about four years ago. He now holds the Quality Control Manager position after building our chemistry program from scratch. “I help make sure that our beers don’t explode,” laughs Spencer. And although he may say it jokingly, he’s absolutely right! Spencer has worked four long and hard years to bring our lab together, all to make certain that we’re making consistent and tasty brews.

“I actually got hired on as a pack tech– because they needed someone,” says Spencer. “I was two weeks into that when Frank (head brewer at the time) approached me asking if I knew how to use a spectrophotometer” (a piece of equipment used to measure diacetyl and IBU’s in a beer). Having completed a degree in Chemistry prior and looking for work in his field, Spencer jumped at the opportunity.

“I was by myself working down here in the Chemistry department,” says Spencer, “In the beginning, there just weren’t a lot of breweries our size doing this…in fact, we’re the only lab in Bellingham and probably anywhere north of Fremont at that” adds Spencer. He knew that if he was going to start an effective program, he had to learn a little from one of the masters. “I [went to] Fremont Brewing for help… [specifically to] Robert Fulwiler (Technical Director at Fremont Brewing). He’s done a ton to help us. And I mean a ton.

Spencer recalls how starting the program felt a lot like piecing the bare minimum together. “Some of our initial equipment we got for free,” notes Spencer, “and as issues have arisen in our brewery we’ve developed and added more equipment as well as added more methods.” He and Corey –Aslan’s Lab Technician and Data Expert– now operate a complete lab.

Corey joined us just two years ago, following a similar path as Spencer by initially starting as a dishwasher up at our Bellingham brewpub before quickly relocating to the lab. A chemistry student at Western, Corey was eager to get more experience in the field as well. It wasn’t too much later that he was offered a position in Aslan’s lab, training under Spencer.

Now Corey plays a crucial role in many of Aslan’s operations. “I started here on the chemistry side of things and realized it was an avenue for helping manage all the data as well,” says Corey. After self-teaching much of his coding, Corey now helps Aslan collect important data that helps improve our day-to-day operations. “It’s been cool teaching myself how to code. I got a computer science minor at Western, but learning how to implement that into certain aspects of the brewery as well has been a lot of fun,” says Corey. Spencer nods in agreement– “Corey is able to communicate data really well,” he adds.

With the two of them joining forces, Aslan now runs an incredibly refined program with little room for error. “We sample every single batch of beer,” says Spencer, “usually averaging about 12 tests per each batch of beer”. This ensures that all of Aslan’s beer comes out tasting right and consistently tasting the same. “Now we have confidence in our canning,” says Spencer. 

It’s because of these two, and the hard work of our brewers, that Aslan is able to keep producing high quality organic craft beer. Thank you to both Corey and Spencer for always going above and beyond and taking care of the little details. We couldn’t do it without you!

The final installment of our Single Hop Series is made exclusively with the ever-popular, and often polarizing, Mosaic hops. When used with other hops, Mosaic can be moderately overpowering. Given an opportunity to stand on its own, the hop's nuance is allowed to take center stage. Mosaic Oasis has big flavors of mango, fresh blueberries, canned peaches, and a slight hint of sweet onion. Mosaic hops have a wide range of flavor expressions, and much like the name, nobody will have the same experience with it. No matter what flavors you pick out of this beer, we hope that you enjoy it and are as excited by it as we are!

What started as a one-off project with the Bellingham Sister City Association (BSCA) has grown into sometime we look forward to every spring. Tateyama, named after our sister city in Japan, is a rice lager brewed with organic California kokuho rose rice from Koda Farms. Their rice provides a delicate, clean, and soft graininess that sweeps the hop flavors across the tongue. With flavors of jasmine, honeydew, and honeysuckle, this beer just screams spring. As we enter into the longer days and begin spending more time outdoors, we're happy to have Tateyama in our pack or in the fridge.

5 Ways to Drink Sustainably

As our favorite local watering holes begin to open up for more indoor and outdoor seating, we can imagine you’re just as excited about (safely drinking) beers with friends. While it was fun bringing the bar home to our houses during quarantine, there’s nothing like a cold pint of draft. Whether you’re enjoying to-go beer at home or hitting the bars for the first time in a long time (masked up, of course!), here are some ways to drink both sustainably and responsibly.

1. Bike or walk to your favorite breweries!

This one seems obvious, but the collective impact would absolutely make a difference if enough people decided to walk/bike to drink a beer. This option is not only a way to lessen your carbon footprint, but to lessen the risk of drinking too much before getting behind the wheel.

2. Opt for beer with locally sourced ingredients.

While this may already be the case for some, buying beer from not only your favorite local breweries, but ones that buy ingredients from local farms is a great way to keep your dollar within the local economy. For instance, we buy lots of grain from Skagit Valley Malting and hops from Yakima Chief Hops. Beer ingredients are heavy and transporting palettes of grain and hop pellets is heavy and high impact in regards to carbon emissions.

3. Check with your city about what kind of six-pack or four-pack holders are recyclable.

A lot of people assume six-pack holders are recyclable right along with the beer can itself. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for all rigid six-pack holders. We are working toward having a collection site of our own for our Pack-Tech six-pack holders since the manufacturers let us send them back to be recycled properly, but until then you can always take them to your local bottle shop where they’re used for mix-and-match six-packs.

Of course, we encourage you to continue saving the turtles by cutting the plastic rings from domestic six-packs. And to answer a FAQ, we don’t use the paper six-pack holders because most of them are made of poly-coated paper, which isn’t recyclable in Bellingham, and is high risk for microplastics when they’re just thrown away in the trash. 

When making sustainability decisions, we always have to assume the worst. In this case, that’s the six-pack holder ending up in the ocean, where microplastics could be more detrimental to the environment than an improperly recycled plastic six-pack holder.

4. Pack it in, pack it out!

We absolutely LOVE to see Aslan beer being enjoyed in the great outdoors! Nothing brings our souls more happiness than a cold beer on a mountain top. But even more so, it’s important to pack it in and pack it out when drinking craft beer outside. Leaving no trace and every environment we get to enjoy undisturbed is so important to us at Aslan. And if you see someone else’s beer cans in the wilderness, pack them back with you! We have a collective responsibility as a species to keep our planet clean and litter-free.

5. Drink Organic Beer!

Good news, if you’re drinking Aslan beer, it’s already organic! By purchasing organic beer, you’re contributing to the demand for organic products and ingredients in our area. The more organic products are available, the more affordable they become, and soon more and more breweries and restaurants will be able to serve you organic food and beers, which are not only better for the environment, but consumers, farmers, and producers.

When one of the premier bottle shops and tasting rooms in the PNW asks you to make their anniversary beer, it seems more than warranted to do something out of the ordinary. For Elizabeth Station's 9th anniversary, we decided to make a Double IPA and up the ante by including over 100 lbs of evergreen branches from Forest Farmstead to drive home the true essence of a PNW beer. This beer is bold, sneaky, and unapologetic. The softness from the oats and wheat carry the pine gently across the pallet. The aroma is deceptively fruity and floral. With flavors of orange juice, apricot, and (obviously) pine needles, this beer is the perfect way to honor one of the best spots to grab a beer in Bellingham. Join us in raising a glass to Elizabeth Station with a hardy congratulations on nine wonderful years of serving the Bellingham beer community top-notch beverages. Cheers!

Employee Feature: Maya

Meet Maya! She's been rocking with us for just under 4 years now, working as a host and waitress at our Bellingham brewpub.

Maya's lived in Bellingham for 8 years now, after moving here from Battleground, Washington to start her Spanish degree. She has since graduated and gone back to school to get her TESOL certification (TESOL: “Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages”), a certification that allows Maya to travel and teach all over the world.

After receiving her certification in summer of 2019, Maya was able to travel to both Mexico and Taiwan for short-term teaching assignments. “The people in Taiwan were so nice” Maya notes of the experience, “and there’s this gift-giving culture where, whenever you meet somebody new or if you haven’t seen somebody in a really long time, you have a ton of gifts prepared for them– so I had to literally buy a new suitcase because I got so many gifts” says Maya.

She has a deep love for traveling to other countries and learning about new cultures. “I’m hoping to do a work-away or WWOOF type of program where I can stay in one spot for a few months at a time” says Maya. The acronym WWOOF stands for “World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms”, and the program aims to teach it’s volunteers about sustainable living and organic agriculture while providing a place to live and a new cultural exchange.

Maya’s desire to partake in this type of organization is very telling of her personality and aspirations. She is known by her peers as a very conscious and hard-working person, always approaching things intentionally and with extreme kindness and care. She’s also naturally inquisitive, always asking questions and looking to expand her knowledge so that she can teach herself and help others along the way. These are just some of the many qualities that have made Maya such a fantastic addition to our team over the years.

Once it is safe to travel internationally again, Maya says she hopes to live in or travel to a Spanish-speaking country in particular, so that she can brush up on her Spanish and become more fluently bilingual. While her travel plans have all been put on hold, Maya says she's happy to be here in Bellingham, preparing for her next move in life. She enjoys many activities, such as reading or cooking new things, starting a new house project, or tending to her many houseplants. And when the weather allows, Maya is also known to be an avid hiker. She spends many of her summer days out in the Cascades exploring new trails and taking in everything the Pacific Northwest has to offer.

Organic Blended Mixed Culture Beer

To celebrate the Aslan Depot's third anniversary, our Depot GM (Will) and Head Brewer (Austin) got together to create something very special. 3 Deep is a blend of two different saisons and two separate barrels of lager aged on Brettanomyces. This beer has a clean pineapple brett character and a light, pleasant acidity that pairs nicely with the oaky barrel and bready grain notes. The lighter body and slightly higher carbonation give this beer an almost champagne-like characteristic, perfect for celebrating. As strange as it might feel to celebrate right now, we should take a moment to raise a glass and appreciate that we've made it through another year!

Our Single Hop IPA Series is back in action, with a slight redesign and a new hop to explore. We present to you Sabro Squeeze, a tropical vacation in a can!

Fairly new to the game, Sabro was first released in 2018, and we are finally able to contract this amazing hop organically. Sabro is most well known for strong coconut and pina colada notes, and we're pleased to report that those flavors, while present, aren't the only thing Sabro has to offer. There is a depth of flavor, including grapefruit, fresh tangerine, tropical pineapple, and kiwi. The softness from the oats and the wheat provides a canvas for hints of coconut and cream to shine through. Sabro Squeeze is best enjoyed by the fireplace pretending to be at a beach catching some rays.

After resting in bourbon barrels for the past two years, one of our most requested beers, Satan's Airport, is ready to make a brief return to the Aslan lineup! We're thrilled with how this batch of Satan's Airport has aged. Strong bourbon flavor and aroma blend with notes of coffee, milk chocolate, and chocolate-covered raisins. We only had a single barrel filled with this nectar, so supplies are limited. Available only at the Brewpub and Aslan Seattle.

2020 Aslan Sustainability Report

When looking back at 2020 as a whole, there’s a lot to be said for being able to focus on sustainability despite the challenges of running a business during a pandemic. In our third year of publishing a sustainability report, it feels good to look back and track our progress. While we met most of our goals this year, and improved in a lot of categories like energy use and waste management, publishing this report each year holds us accountable in categories where we don’t meet benchmarks we had set the year before. 

At Aslan, we see it as our responsibility as a large craft brewery to lessen our impact as much as possible. Making organic craft beer takes a lot of resources as it is, meaning it’s necessary to offset that in any way we can. Luckily, a lot of our utilities can be offset by purchasing restoration credits. For example, we can buy Water Restoration Certificates through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Similar to purchasing carbon or energy offsets, Water Restoration Certificates ensure that the water we use in our business is accounted for, and are used to fund restoration projects all over the nation. These credits can end up accounting for millions of gallons of water restored in reclamation projects such as irrigation infrastructure upgrades, water management agreements and natural hydrologic restoration. 

The sustainability report requires a lot of number crunching through stacks of utility bills, triple checking our work, and experiencing the ups and downs of whether or not we meet all of our goals. Oftentimes, running a sustainable business and being a B Corp feels like we are in constant competition with ourselves. Year after year, we truly do try and improve on our footprint by introducing new programs, like our 2019 addition of the plastic film recycling program. Moving forward, we are excited to see what 2021 brings in terms of sustainability! This year we will be contributing to salmon safety, restructuring some of our other efforts, and hopefully meeting our goal on water reclamation. 

None of this would be possible without the support of our community, who has been willing to help us continue to make organic craft beer for the people. Our hope is to be continually as transparent as possible with you all. Thank you for reading and being an active part of making Aslan a better institution for the planet.


Employee Feature: Keaton

Meet Keaton– Our warehousing specialist. Best described as Aslan’s “beer shepherd”.

“I don’t make it and I don’t sell it” explains Keaton, “but I do everything in between”.

Keaton’s job is a conglomeration of fine details and big picture work– making sure that beer gets to where it needs to go, keeping our inventory organized, ensuring that we have the grain we need for brewing and the packaging materials we need for packaging… He does a little bit of everything around here.

Keaton started out as a pack tech a little over a year and a half ago before quickly advancing to his current position as our warehousing specialist. “To be honest, I didn't know anything about brewing or craft beer before.” Keaton admits, “so it's great to be trusted and to have management and coworkers be patient enough to let people learn their way into new roles” says Keaton, “I’ve learned a lot since I started”.

A big time skier, Keaton moved out to Bellingham 13 years ago from Boise, Idaho in search of a new mountain to call home. He quickly fell in love with Mt. Baker and with Bellingham. “I don't really want to leave!” exclaims Keaton, “it's just a great community and culture… lots of outdoors folks”.

Having access to the outdoors is pretty important to Keaton, who spends most of his free days in winter time up at the slopes. In the summer when the snow has melted away he enjoys doing other activities such as hiking, camping, or what he describes as “fair weather surfing” out on the peninsula. “I used to mountain bike a lot too” Keaton adds, “but I’ve [had a lot] of injuries”.

While he may not be much of a mountain biker anymore, he does still enjoy getting out on a bike from time to time. “Bike touring is super fun” says Keaton, “it's just time consuming”. Keaton tells in detail of the time he took off after college on a 5 month long bike touring trip. “I rode from Bellingham over the Cascades to Boise to visit family first”. From there he headed down south to join some friends at the Burning Man festival in Nevada. “After that I went to Yosemite and then down to the San Diego area” adds Keaton, “then I peddled back up the coast to Oregon and went over to Bend, but by then it was November and it was snowing... so I just kind of called her a day”. By the end of the trip Keaton had ridden over 3,000 miles. “It's fun” says Keaton, “you're moving fast enough to actually get places, but slow enough that you don't miss things as they pass by”.

Keaton says he has lots of travel plans for the future, once the world reopens. Until then– we are lucky to have him here at Aslan. He is recognized as an outstanding coworker and friend to so many, known for his kindness and genuity, solid work ethic, and positive attitude.

Organic Fruited Saison

6.2% ABV

light body + raspberries + lightly tart


Raspberry Dojo, like all others in our Dojo series, begins with the same base beer. Once the fruit is ripe and picked down in Skagit Valley by our friends at Hedlin Farms, we take the whole fruit and blend it into a "puree" and mix it with our base Saison in a French Oak barrel. We let this beer rest in the barrels for just under a year before blending it for packaging. This beer has flavors of, can you guess.... Fresh Raspberries. There is an oakiness that balances the raspberries' acidity and leaves you feeling like you just had a creamsicle. We love the beers in the Dojo series because it gives us an opportunity to further experience the magical growing region we call home.

Organic Czech-Style Dark Lager

Toasted Bread + Charred Aspen + Fresh Toffee


Created as an homage to the legendary dark lager brewed by U Fleku in Prague, Color of Sleep is a complex yet drinkable beer perfect for cold weather. Imported Pilsner malt complements deep flavors of roasted pecans, dark chocolate, fresh-baked bread, and caramel. Decoction mashing adds a rich intricacy to the malt profile, balanced by herbal bitterness from Czech Saaz hops. Extended lagering and natural carbonation lead to a finished beer that will leave you reaching for more!
